Description
Horten is a small seaside town, with many flourishing green areas on the outskirts.
The coastline stretches for 40 kilometres from the Re community in the north to Toensberg in the south. The town of Horten is located out on a peninsula along the Oslofjord.
History
The municipality has settlements dating back to the Stone Age. The Borre mounds, part of the Borre National Park (the first national park to be founded in Norway), bear witness to the fact that the area was a centre of power in the Viking Age.
Hiking and walking - Historical paths
The countryside of Horten provides great opportunities for short hikes and walks, such as Moeringa (Karljohansvern), Hortensmarka recreational area and Borrevannet (lake), Loevoeya island, Varnestangen ant the Veggefjell mountains with a spectacular view of the various parts of the Oslofjord.
Karljohansvern - old Horten
Karljohansvern is surrounded by the sea. Here you can enjoy life in a quiet place in an otherwise urban environment, with space to hike and bike in beautiful surroundings.
Parts of the area are preserved in order to protect bird wild life and plants.
