Fate's a plane of shifting water
Moving on while we stand still
Life replete with hope and slaughter
Dragging with it human will
Life's a raft of tethered lumber
Holding us above the waves
From the start death's got our number
Keeps us busy till our graves
Filling time with endless actions
Work and money, social themes
Underneath, fate's random factions
Tease our faith and steal our dreams
Death's release from human hubris
Plans, careers, belief and prayers
Death's the drowning of all newness
Life's amazing range of wares
Hence we balance on the water
Knowing life won't last for long
Gift our worlds to sons and daughters
Singing ever hopeful songs.
