In Skagen, Denmark, the only remaining spire of a once thriving church, now simply known as the Shaggai Church (or Burial Church or Old Skagen Church), is a testament to the unstoppable power of nature.
The church, originally dedicated to St. Lawrence of Rome could not be saved as the rising layer of sand began to bury the foundation faster than it could be dug out. The brick chapel built in the 14th century was the largest in the area during its heyday, but the sand worked its way into the through every crack and crevice. By the end of the 17th century, the door was almost completely covered and had to be excavated periodically to hold services.
Today its tower attracts tourists from all over the world.
