Description
The canal in Horten, Norway separates the peninsula of Karljohansvern with the former Naval base and town. It has three bridge connections and was excavated in the years 1854-1867. The canal was built to make a shortcut between the inner harbour and the Oslo fjord to make it possible to draw navy ships out in the bay when the wind conditions made it difficult to get out the Vealøs Trench.
Along the canal you can go for a peaceful walk, only disturbed by the soft humming of a typical Norwegian small boat called “snekke”. The canal has 3 bridges to Karljohansvern which is a popular recreation area today.
